I was having a really hard time deciding what to give my mom for Mother's Day. Lately I have been trying to give more homemade gifts, but I just couldn't think of anything. Then one day inspiration struck. I work in the primary at church. I teach the nine year olds. Both of them. A few weeks ago, we started learning a song to sing for the mothers on Mother's Day. We were learning the song "I Often Go Walking" from the LDS Children's Songbook. Here are the words.
I often go walking in meadows of clover,
And I gather armfuls of blossoms of blue.
I gather the blossoms the whole meadow over,
Dear mother all flowers remind me of you.
Dear Mother, I give you my love with each flower,
To give forth sweet fragrance a whole lifetime through.
For if I love blossoms and meadows and walking,
I learned how to love them, Dear Mother, from you.
As I listened to this song, I was really touched by the last line. I thought about how someday Sweet Girl will love things because I taught her to love them. How amazing is that? Then I started to think about the things that I love because my mother taught me to love them.
I started with the card. I made it on my digital scrapbooking program. I just typed the words of the song on the front.On the inside I made a collage of pictures of things that my mother taught me to love. Some were funny things like the old TV show Scarecrow and Mrs. King or our favorite candy bar, that we always call a peanut nut roll even though it's not actually called that. Other things were more serious like Handel's Messiah or the scriptures.
To go along with the card I made her some beautiful flowers. Sadly I couldn't find any blue gumdrops so they didn't exactly match the song, but the idea was there.
Here is what you need:
Vase or pot to put them in. I found mine at the dollar store.
1 Pkg. of the Keebler Fudge shop Cookies.
Skewers
Small bag of gumdrops. Buy the smallest bag possible because you don't need very many, and who actually eats gumdrops? I ended up throwing a whole bunch away.
Tissue paper
I started by pushing the gumdrops down on the pointed end of the skewer. You don't have to go down very far. The balance the cookie on top and push another gumdrop down on top to hold the cookie in place. I learned that it is very important to have the flat sides of the gumdrop against the cookie. The rounded side isn't quite big enough to fill the hole in the cookie and the cookie will just slide around.
I wrapped this green tissue paper around a crumpled piece of tissue paper and them pushed it into the bottom of the vase. I was able to stick the skewers into the crumpled tissue paper to give them support to stay standing. I also cut some of the skewers to give the whole arrangement some variety.
